Montemercurio’s “Damo” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an homage to their grandfather “Nonno Damo” who in the mid 20th-century planted the first vines that were used in the production of this wine. “Damo” is Montemercurio’s leading wine and is produced with a careful eye for every last detail.

Aged for at least two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, once bottled this wine rests for another year before being put on the market. It is a wine of wonderful sensory appeal that captures the beauty of the historic vines from which it is produced and the essence of the region from which it comes, that has always produced incredible wines.

After careful selection by hand in the vineyard and meticulous sorting of the berries on arrival at the winery, the grapes are separated for maturation into smallish containers to optimise the extraction of flavours from the skins. The fermentation proceeds without selected yeasts, relying on the natural ones inherent in the local area. Contact with the skins depends on the grape variety from a minimum of 18 days to a maximum of 25-28 days, during which brief and delicate pressings (follature) are made.

The wine is then transferred to small Slovenian oak casks of 10hl (1,000 litres) where the fermentation continues for at least 24 months. During this period some light transferring between vats occurs to stabilise the wine and then it is gently filtered, but not clarified, thus still allowing the wine to maintain all the intrinsic organic components. Finally, a further 12 months in bottles.

Tasting Notes

This intensely garnet-coloured red wine boasts fragrances of ripe berries, dark, bold spices, liquorice, tobacco and truffle. It is full-bodied yet supported by a bold blend of tannins. In the mouth it reveals a certain freshness mixed and full-flavoured quality with a long, balanced persistence. This wine pairs especially well with dishes featuring game, fowl or red meats.
